Looking for a Barnes & Noble book publisher? Barnes & Noble is a bookseller, and its free self-publishing platform, Barnes & Noble Press (B&N Press), lets authors sell eBooks and print books on BN.com. You can publish there yourself, submit to a traditional or independent press whose books Barnes & Noble sells, or hire a book publishing services company like Rockwell Book Press to do the professional work while you keep your rights. This guide explains each option plainly, shares verified B&N Press royalties, ISBN rules, and pricing, and tells you where Rockwell Book Press fits.
Rockwell Book Press helps authors across the United States turn a finished manuscript into a professionally edited, designed, and formatted eBook, paperback, or hardcover, then publish it for Barnes & Noble readers, Google Books, and more. Editing, book illustration, cover design, formatting, ISBN registration, and distribution are handled by one team.

About this guide: Written by the Rockwell Book Press editorial team and last updated October 24, 2026. Barnes & Noble Press royalties, pricing, ISBN, and distribution details were checked against B&N Press's official Help Center on that date, and ISBN and copyright rules against the sources listed at the end of this page. In the interest of transparency: Rockwell Book Press is a paid publishing services company. We are not Barnes & Noble, we are not owned by or affiliated with Barnes & Noble, and we are not a traditional publisher or a selective press. We do not acquire manuscripts or pay advances, you keep your rights, and no one can guarantee that Barnes & Noble will stock your book in its stores. Barnes & Noble, B&N Press, and NOOK are trademarks of their respective owners.
Barnes & Noble Publishing Options: Your Paths to Getting Your Book on BN.com
"Barnes & Noble publisher" can mean several different things, so it helps to compare the paths side by side. Most options fall into five models. The right one depends on your goals, your timeline, and how much control you want.
| Option | How It Works | Rights and Control | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional publisher | A publishing house acquires your manuscript, usually through a literary agent, and sells it to retailers such as Barnes & Noble. | The publisher generally controls rights, design, pricing, and release timing. | Authors with an agent and an established platform who can wait for the process. |
| Barnes & Noble Press (do it yourself) | You create a free B&N Press account and upload your own files. eBooks sell on BN.com, the Barnes & Noble app, and NOOK, and print books sell on BN.com and the app. | You keep ownership and the platform is non-exclusive. B&N Press does not place books in stores. | Authors with the time, skills, and budget to manage every task. |
| Independent press or distributor | A press outside the largest publishing groups selects manuscripts, or a print-on-demand distributor lists your title so retailers and libraries can order it. | Varies by contract. Read the rights, term, royalty, and reversion clauses closely. | Authors whose book fits a press's list, or who want wider retailer and library availability. |
| Publishing services (Rockwell Book Press) | You choose a package, and a professional team edits, designs, formats, and publishes your book. Barnes & Noble distribution starts with our Standard package. | You keep 100% ownership rights. Every package lists no royalties share. | Authors who want professional quality without learning every tool. |
| Vanity press | Charges authors for printing, often with bundled extras. | Terms vary widely, and some require the author to buy copies or share rights. | Compare carefully and get every term in writing before you sign. |
Terms such as "hybrid publisher" are used loosely across the industry, so judge any publisher by its written contract rather than its label. The Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) publishes Hybrid Publisher Criteria, a list of 11 criteria for what makes a professional hybrid publisher, which is a useful benchmark for any company you consider. The checklist below shows how.

How to Choose a Barnes & Noble Book Publisher: 7 Questions to Ask
Publishing is a significant investment, so evaluate any company, including us, before you commit. These questions help authors compare Barnes & Noble book publishers and avoid common problems.
- Who owns the rights? You should keep ownership of your book. Get it in writing, and look for any royalties share or rights transfer.
- Who is the publisher of record on the ISBN? B&N Press's free print ISBN lists Barnes & Noble Press as the publisher and works only on that platform, while an ISBN you buy from Bowker lists you. Ask whose name will appear on yours.
- Is the full price in writing? A good publisher lists what each package includes, as we do on our publishing packages page.
- Can you see real published books? Look for live listings you can verify, such as the Recently Published Books above.
- Can you reach a real team? Look for a working phone number, an address, and people who answer questions before you pay.
- What are the revision and guarantee terms? Ask how many revisions each draft includes and what the satisfaction guarantee covers.
- Are there promises nobody can keep? No publisher can guarantee Barnes & Noble shelf placement, bestseller status, or a specific number of sales. Be wary of anyone who does.
The Authors Guild also publishes guidance for authors evaluating publishers and contracts. We encourage you to ask us all seven questions during your free consultation.
Books We Publish for Barnes & Noble Authors
Authors write across every category. Our team works with:
- Memoir and biography. Personal stories, career retrospectives, and family histories, with ghostwriting support available.
- Fiction and genre novels. Novels, series, and story worlds in every genre, from thrillers and romance to science fiction and fantasy.
- Business, self-help, and wellness. Expert books that build credibility for consultants, founders, coaches, and health professionals.
- Children's and illustrated books. Picture books, early readers, and illustrated chapter books with full interior art. Color interiors raise print cost, which affects your B&N Press print royalty, so we plan art and page count together.
- Cookbooks, travel, and lifestyle. Image-rich books with careful interior layout.
- Multilingual editions. Bilingual and translated editions through our book translation service.
Book Illustration Services for Barnes & Noble Authors
Illustration can make a Barnes & Noble listing far more compelling, and it is essential for picture books and early readers. Our book illustration services include illustrated covers, picture book spreads, spot art and chapter openers for longer titles, and fixed-layout eBook formatting, where the platform supports it, so text and art stay aligned on every page. Color interiors cost more to print, so we plan illustration and print options together. Browse the examples below, then talk with our team about the style your book needs.
From Typed Manuscript to Illustrated Page
A manuscript page and a finished picture book page can look like different books. This comparison shows the same text before and after illustration and layout, so you can see what the work adds beyond the art itself: pacing, composition, and room for the words.
Once upon a time, in a quiet little village near a big forest, there lived a rabbit named Pip.
Pip loved to explore, but Pip had never gone past the old oak tree at the edge of the meadow.
One morning, Pip finally decided it was time to see what was on the other side.
Same story, same words — illustrated and laid out for a young reader.
Layout Examples: How Text and Illustration Work Together
Illustration only works when the page around it is designed well. These examples show cover compositions, picture book spreads, and illustrated interior pages. Click any image to enlarge it.

Illustrated Interior Pages & Chapter Layouts
What we check on every layout: text sits in open areas of the art, important elements stay clear of the trim and the center fold, and each spread is composed so the eye moves in reading order.
Children's Book Illustration Style Samples
Style is the first decision a children's book illustrator will ask you about. These samples show four directions authors request often. We match your story to a style, and an illustrator, that fits your readers.
Choosing a style by age and mood
- Toddlers and bedtime stories: soft, rounded shapes and gentle color.
- Early readers: bold, high-contrast art that stays readable at small sizes.
- Adventure and humor: expressive characters with strong movement.
- Series: pick a style that can be reproduced consistently across many books.
- Print cost: printers price color and black-ink interiors differently, so a black-and-white style can lower your per-copy cost.
ISBN, Copyright, and Pricing Basics for Barnes & Noble Authors
Three details trip up first-time authors more than any others. Here are the facts, with sources at the bottom of the page.
- ISBN. A print book on B&N Press needs a unique, never-used ISBN, and each format of your book (paperback, hardcover) needs its own number. B&N Press offers a free print ISBN that lists Barnes & Noble Press as the publisher and can only be used on that platform. If you buy your own, Bowker is the official U.S. ISBN agency, a single ISBN costs $125 through Bowker's MyIdentifiers store as of October 2026, and your imprint must match Bowker's record. An ISBN is not required for an eBook. Our Standard package and higher include ISBN and barcode registration.
- Copyright. Your work is protected once it is fixed in a tangible form, but registration with the U.S. Copyright Office is a separate, optional step. The online fee for a single author, one work, not made for hire is $45. We are not a law firm, so consult an attorney for legal advice.
- Pricing and royalties. Barnes & Noble Press sets the royalty and pricing rules, and they change. The table below shows the current terms.
Barnes & Noble Press Royalties and Pricing
Understanding B&N Press royalties helps you set a price with confidence. These are the terms published in the B&N Press Help Center as of October 24, 2026:
| Format / Term | Rule | What to Know |
|---|---|---|
| eBook royalty | 70% of the list price on sales priced at $0.99 and higher | A flat rate with no price bands. You set your own list price. |
| Paperback and hardcover royalty | 55% of the list price, minus the per-book printing cost | Printing cost depends on format, trim size, page count, and ink color, so color illustrated interiors earn less per copy at the same price. |
| Minimum print price | $14.99 for new print listings since April 22, 2026 | Print titles priced below $14.99 began to be removed from sale on May 14, 2026. |
| Payment timing | After you accrue $25 in royalties and 30 days pass after the end of the sale month | For example, January sales are reflected in the February payment. |
| Exclusivity | None. B&N Press is non-exclusive. | You can sell elsewhere, but an ISBN already submitted to another retailer cannot be used for B&N Press print. |
| Where your book sells | eBooks: BN.com, the Barnes & Noble app, NOOK. Print: BN.com and the app. | B&N Press does not place your book in Barnes & Noble bookstores, and it does not sell audiobooks. |
B&N Press terms change from time to time, so confirm current details on the official Royalty and Payment Terms page before you set your price. We walk through pricing options with you during your free consultation.
