How to Choose an Amazon KDP Book Publisher: 7 Questions to Ask
Publishing is a significant investment, so evaluate any company, including us, before you commit. These questions help authors compare KDP publishing services and avoid common problems.
- Who owns the rights? You should keep ownership of your book. Get it in writing, and look for any royalties share or rights transfer.
- Whose KDP account will the book live in? Amazon pays royalties through the KDP account, so ask who controls that account and where your royalties are deposited. Get the answer in writing.
- Whose name will appear as the imprint? KDP shows the imprint as "Independently published" when you use its free ISBN, and in the United States ISBNs you buy are sold by Bowker, with the buyer listed as the publisher. Ask which name will appear on yours.
- Is the full price in writing? A good publisher lists what each package includes, as we do on our publishing packages page.
- Can you see real published books? Look for live listings you can verify, such as the Recently Published Books above.
- Can you reach a real team, and what are the revision terms? Look for a working phone number, an address, and people who answer questions before you pay. Ask how many revisions each draft includes and what the satisfaction guarantee covers.
- Are there promises nobody can keep? No publisher can guarantee bestseller status, a sales rank, or a specific number of sales. Be wary of anyone who does.

ISBN, Copyright, and Pricing Basics for Kindle Authors
Three details trip up first-time authors more than any others. Here are the facts, with sources at the bottom of the page.
- ISBN. A Kindle eBook does not need an ISBN on KDP, because Amazon assigns it an ASIN. Paperback and hardcover editions do need one, and each format needs its own number. KDP offers a free ISBN for print books, but Amazon states it can only be used on KDP and the imprint shows as "Independently published." If you buy your own, Bowker is the official U.S. ISBN agency, and as of October 2026 a single ISBN costs $125 through Bowker's MyIdentifiers store. Our Standard package and higher include ISBN and barcode registration.
- Copyright. Your work is protected once it is fixed in a tangible form, but registration with the U.S. Copyright Office is a separate, optional step. The online fee for a single author, one work, not made for hire is $45. We are not a law firm, so consult an attorney for legal advice.
- Pricing and royalties. Amazon KDP sets the price bands and royalty rules, and they change. The table below shows the current terms.

Understanding KDP royalties helps you set a price with confidence. Amazon updated the price band for the higher eBook royalty option in 2026:

KDP Select and Kindle+ (Formerly Kindle Unlimited)
On October 22, 2026, Amazon announced that it was renaming Kindle Unlimited to Kindle+ and adding audiobooks to the subscription. Enrolling your Kindle eBook in KDP Select makes it eligible for Kindle+, and earnings for Kindle+ activity are paid from the KDP Select Global Fund. Enrollment lasts 90 days and renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renewal, and the exclusivity applies to your Kindle eBook only, not your print editions.
One change deserves attention if you plan an audiobook. Amazon states that audiobooks created with its virtual voice tool are automatically included in Kindle+ when the associated eBook is enrolled in KDP Select, and that authors who do not want that can unpublish the audiobook or unenroll the eBook.
