Want to know what it will cost to publish your book? The calculator at the top of this page does the math for you. Choose your genre, manuscript length, publishing format, and marketing level, tick any extras, and you will see a total, a line-by-line breakdown of how it was reached, and the publishing package that comes closest. Everything is built from the same published prices you will find on our packages page, so the number you see is the number we would start from.
Below, you will find how to use the calculator, how to read each line of your breakdown, a price list for every service in it, worked scenarios for different kinds of authors, and the costs that sit outside it. Prefer to understand the method first? Read our book publishing cost estimator guide. When your number looks right, request a free, tailored quote or start a live chat.
About this calculator: Built and maintained by the Rockwell Book Press editorial team and last updated October 25, 2026. Its prices come from our published packages, and the ISBN, copyright, and Amazon KDP details on this page were checked against the official sources listed at the end. Rockwell Book Press is a paid publishing services company, not a traditional publisher, so the calculator shows what it costs to hire our team, and the result is an estimate rather than a binding quote.
How to Use the Book Publishing Cost Calculator
It takes about a minute. Work through the five steps in order and watch the total and breakdown update as you go.
- Pick your genre. Fiction, children's book, non-fiction, memoir or biography, or business and self-help. Each applies a small adjustment to the format price.
- Choose your manuscript length. Under 30,000 words, 30,000 to 80,000 words, or 80,000 and up. Longer manuscripts take more editing and layout work.
- Select your publishing format. eBook only, eBook plus paperback with cover design, or eBook plus paperback plus hardcover with ISBN.
- Set your marketing level. From Amazon and Kindle publishing only up to 24 months of brand marketing with wide distribution.
- Tick your extras. Premium formatting, illustrations, press release, a marketing campaign, ISBN and barcode, or audiobook production.
Have these ready: your approximate word count, the formats you want, whether the book needs illustrations, and a rough budget. If you are unsure, pick the closest option. You can change any answer and the total updates instantly.
How to Read Your Calculator Results
Your result has three parts: the total, the breakdown beneath it, and the closest package. Each line of the breakdown means something specific.
- Publishing format. The starting price for the editions you chose: $700, $2,000, or $3,000.
- Genre adjustment. The dollar effect of your genre on that starting price. It is negative for non-fiction, zero for fiction, and positive for memoir, business, and children's books.
- Manuscript length adjustment. The extra cost, if any, for a medium or long manuscript.
- Online presence and marketing. The amount added by the marketing level you selected.
- Additional services. The total of every extra you ticked.
- Total. The sum of those lines, rounded to the nearest $50.
Breakdown lines are shown before the final rounding, so they can differ from the rounded total by up to $25. The closest package is a guide to which published package your total resembles, not a promise that the package matches your scope exactly.
Book Publishing Costs by Service
This is every price the calculator uses, from the format that sets your starting point to the extras that move it. Use it to see which choices change your total the most.
| Service or Option | Calculator Price (USD) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| eBook only (format price) | $700 | Authors who want a Kindle edition first. |
| eBook + paperback with cover design (format price) | $2,000 | Authors who want a designed cover and a print edition. |
| eBook + paperback + hardcover with ISBN (format price) | $3,000 | Authors who want all three editions with ISBN and barcode included. |
| ISBN and barcode | +$125 per format | Print formats when ISBN is not already included. |
| Illustrations x10 | +$250 | Adding interior art to a title. |
| Premium formatting and layout design | +$350 | Books with a more complex interior layout. |
| Book marketing campaign | +$400 | A lighter, one-time marketing push. |
| Press release and PR | +$1,500 | Authors who want announcement and PR support. |
| Audiobook production | +$1,500 | Authors adding an audio edition. |
| Author website, book trailer and Google Books | +$4,000 | Building an online author presence. |
| 12-month brand marketing, website and trailer | +$12,000 | Authors building a lasting author brand. |
| 24-month brand marketing and wide distribution | +$22,000 | The most complete reach and marketing. |
Genre and manuscript length adjust the format price by a percentage rather than a flat fee: −5% to +10% for genre and 0% to +20% for length. The marketing level has the biggest effect, ranging from no extra cost to $22,000.
Book Publishing Cost Calculator Scenarios by Author Goal
These four examples were run through the calculator to show how different goals produce different totals. They illustrate the tool and are not quotes.
| Author Goal | Selections | Calculator Total | Closest Package |
|---|---|---|---|
| First-time memoirist | Memoir, 30,000–80,000 words, eBook + paperback, Amazon & Kindle only, premium formatting & layout | $2,650 | Standard Package ($3,000) |
| Short non-fiction guide | Non-fiction, under 30,000 words, eBook only, Amazon & Kindle only, no add-ons | $650 | Basic Package ($700) |
| Self-help author building a brand | Business / self-help, 30,000–80,000 words, eBook + paperback + hardcover, 12-month brand marketing, book marketing campaign | $15,850 | Premium Package ($15,000) |
| Series author going wide with audio | Fiction, 80,000+ words, eBook + paperback + hardcover, 24-month brand marketing & wide distribution, audiobook production | $27,100 | Enterprise Package ($25,000) |
The last scenario passes our largest package because a long manuscript, the top marketing level, and an audiobook stack together. When that happens, a tailored quote confirms the exact price for your scope.
Costs Outside the Calculator
The calculator covers what you pay Rockwell Book Press. A few other costs depend on third parties, so it helps to plan for them.
- Printing. For paperback and hardcover editions on Amazon KDP, printing cost is deducted from your print royalty, so color illustrated interiors earn less per copy at the same list price.
- eBook delivery fee. KDP's 70% eBook royalty, available at list prices from $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com (effective July 7, 2026), is subject to a delivery fee based on file size. KDP terms change, so confirm current details on Amazon's official page.
- ISBN. As of October 2026, a single ISBN costs $125 through Bowker, and each print or audio format needs its own number. A Kindle eBook does not need one.
- Copyright registration. Registering with the U.S. Copyright Office is a separate, optional step. The online fee for a single author, one work, not made for hire is $45. We are not a law firm, so consult an attorney for legal advice.
- Services not in the calculator. Ghostwriting, translation, screenplay adaptation, and larger illustration projects are quoted separately.
How to Judge Any Book Publishing Cost Calculator
Not every online price tool is equally trustworthy. Whether you use ours or someone else's, check these five things:
- Does it show its assumptions? You should be able to see what each choice adds.
- Does it call itself an estimate? A calculator cannot know your manuscript, so a reliable one says its result is not a final quote.
- Does it match published prices? Compare the result with the company's packages page.
- Does it say what is excluded? Printing, ISBNs, and custom work should be addressed.
- Does it ask for personal details first? Be cautious of tools that hide the number until you hand over contact information.
The Authors Guild also publishes guidance for authors evaluating publishers and contracts.
From Calculator Total to Tailored Quote
Your calculator total is the fastest way to set a budget. A tailored quote is how you fix a price. In a free consultation, our team reviews your manuscript, your genre, and your goals, then confirms your scope and price in a written project scope. Things that can move your price from the calculator figure include the condition of your manuscript, the amount of illustration your book needs, and any services outside the calculator.
You can request your quote here, call (440) 299-6389, or start a live chat. You can also compare the full publishing packages side by side.
Illustration Costs in the Calculator
Illustration is the item most likely to move your final price. In the calculator, ten interior illustrations add $250, and our packages from Start Up upward include graphic or illustrated cover design. A full picture book, or a book with art on every page, is scoped after a free consultation because the cost depends on page count, style, and color. See our book illustration services for examples.
