- Sales and use tax permit. Texas sellers of taxable items generally register with the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts for a Sales and Use Tax Permit, and the permit application is free.
- Sales tax rate. The Texas state sales and use tax rate is 6.25 percent, and local jurisdictions can add up to 2 percent, for a maximum combined rate of 8.25 percent. Whether you must collect tax depends on how you sell, such as copies you sell yourself at events or on your own website versus copies sold through a retailer.
- Assumed name. If you publish under an imprint name that is not your legal name, you may need to file an assumed name certificate. The filing office depends on your business structure, so confirm it before you file.
